Dave Hale’s S&S Racing Team, ’40 Willys coupe embodies the spirit of Gasser racing. A small block Chevy with Hilborn injection powers the Willys, and Hale continues to enjoy running this vintage Gasser! Tom Sneden’s “Bounty Hunters” Mopars were among the strongest of the 60’s Super Stocks. This ’65 Dodge runs a Dodge A-990 option, 426 Hemi and Torqueflite 727 automatic transmission, just as it did in the 60’s. Few Southern drag racers have as large a legend as Hubert “Hue Baby” Platt. Hubert’s list of “cars raced” included ’55 Chevy’s, A/FX Ford Falcons, Ford Mustang Super Stocks and the Ford Drag Clinic program with Randy “Big Stuff” Payne, and Pro Stock racing with a 427 SOHC Ford powered Mustang. Hubert still lives in the Atlanta, GA area. Lamar “Bunky” Bobo’s Ringgold, GA ’40 Willys was a feared A/Gas runner in the 60’s. Bunky dropped in a Dodge A-990, 426 Hemi engine and Torqueflite trans that hauled this Willys coupe to nine second, 140+ mph times. Bunky won the A/Gas class at the NASCAR WinterNationals in Deland, Florida, 1966 and Comp Eliminator in 1967. Bob Bernardon’s ’39 Chevy coupe was a featured car in Hot Rod Magazine, w-a-y back in the early 1960’s. The Maryland-based Chevy ran an injected small block Chevy and four-speed when it captured the C/Gas class title at the NHRA Nationals! Bernardon’s “Jolly Dolly” was named for his amiable wife, Dolly. An outstanding example of Gasser craftsmanship, this car carried plenty of chrome and flawless paint and equal go-fast performance. Mopar legend “Dandy Dick” Landy passed away early in 2007, but his legacy of fast Dodge race cars lives on. This Pro Stock example is 426 Hemi powered, with a chassis built by famed dragster chassis designer and fabricator, Kent Fuller. Fuller built the original Greer-Black-Prudhomme and Roland Leong’s Hawaiian dragsters in the 60’s. TV host and drag racing authority Brett Kepner was on hand to shoot the 2007 East Coast Drag Times Drag Racing Hall of Fame weekend for his nationally syndicated show, “Inside Drag Racing”. Kepner was also honored with the Wally Parks Motorsports Statesman Award during Sunday’s Hall of Fame ceremonies. Every side street of Henderson, NC was occupied by interesting cars of all types, makes and models. Henderson’s historic downtown firehouse is the backdrop for this collection of Ford Mustang enthusiasts. Some car makes, such as these Mustangs, gathered side-by-side, others mixed and mingled among the 1,000+ entered cars. Among the Mustangs was this 1967 Cobra-Jet 428 Mustang once owned and raced by Atlanta’s Phil Bonner. Bonner ran early A/Factory Experimental’s and was a match-race hero in the mid-1960’s. Bonner’s cars were all known as “Daddy Warbucks”. Nothing says “horsepower” like a pair of Holley 4500 carburetors mounted on a Tunnel Ram intake manifold atop a 426 Hemi! This system churns out 700+ HP for the Dick Landy Dodge Demon Pro Stocker.
